Buffalo is an important animal species that provides a source of milk, meat, skin, hides, fertilizer, fuel and draft power and is an integral part of agriculture throughout the world including Asia, South America, the Mediterranean, and other regions. India has the largest livestock populations in the world. It has 57 percent of the world’s buffalo population. Buffalo contributes about 55% of the Indian milk production. Therefore, buffaloes are an important livestock animal species. After completion of human Genome sequence, livestock animal species have greatly benefited from leaps in technology, to create healthier, more productive, disease-resistant farm animals reducing the costs of agriculture and providing consumers with more nutritious, pesticide-free foods.
